I had the amazing opportunity to open for legendary songwriter Andrea Martin back in December when she came to do a gig in London and got to meet the woman herself! Please click on the image above to read this great interview by Anna Nathanson for the Independent and discover how Andrea became one of the most influential names in R&B music as she tells us about her incredible career to date.

Last Saturday I took to the stage at Bar Red Square, Croydon; a successful night that showcased some of the best up & coming Brit-Filipino artists all under one roof! As the main act of the night, I performed an acoustic set of tracks from my forthcoming album (out later this year) to a receptive audience. Despite a technical sound hitch in the middle of my set, I kept going showing everyone that this was not going to bring me down and gave it my all for the rest of the set. On the whole, this was a great night with big shout-outs going out to Chris Raza (organiser) and the K2S Promotions team for putting it on! ;)

This is the first song I ever learnt and sung, I was eight and performed it at a family wedding. More than just a fan, Whitney was a huge inspiration and in my eyes was the epitome of what it meant to be a truly brilliant singer. Aside from that unmatched voice, this woman had model-looks, class, intelligence and oozed sex-appeal, all of which made her the superstar icon she went on to become. Though she is no longer with us, her music and legacy will live on… Whitney, you really are the Greatest! x

I was one amongst an array of UK-Filipino artists who showed support and performed at a benefit concert in aid of the victims of Typhoon Sendong in the Philippines that occurred recently. It was a full-house at Costa Dorada (off Tottenham Court Rd) as the [all paying] crowd were treated to a top quality show, which included up & coming Filipino musicians, leading West End entertainers, and the brilliant Lahing Kayumanggi Cultural Dance Troup. I sang two songs: ‘The Prayer’ – a duet with Opera singer Karlene Denolo Hayworth and an original ‘Angel In The Sky’. The night managed to raise £2042 (and still rising)!

Check out the video (with a snippet of my performance at 9:46) – a positive and special evening this was..

Here are some cool shots taken from the gig at Brixton Mass hosted by US singer-songwriter Andrea Martin. The night showcased some awesome UK talent and I sang two tracks, “Lay You Down” and upcoming single “Living In The City”. Andrea Martin herself was incredible; singing all the hits she had written for people that made her a music legend including “Don’t Let Go (Love)”, “Better In Time”, “Before You Walk Out My Life”, “You’re The One” (duet with UK singer Yasmin), “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and latest single “I Still Love You”. I got to meet, chat & party with Andrea after the show, which was very cool especially as she was such a real and interesting person. What an inspiration and a night I will never forget..

Last Friday, I performed at a 2000-capacity London venue as an opening act for an award-winning Filipino comedian/actor. This guy is huge in the Philippines, he has broken box office records, has millions of fans on Facebook, he’s the Filipino equivalent to someone like Russell Brand in terms of success.  Anyway, what happened to me was pretty surreal.

The doors opened to the masses of people queuing around the block who came to see the show, but bag checks meant that it was running behind schedule. Therefore, while the artists had initially prepared two songs each, we were all told to cut our sets to just one song. I was a bit miffed. The show eventually started and the first act went on, completely ignored the change and sang two songs! The following three acts did the same! All the while, I thought to myself I work hard on my music, and opportunities such as this don’t come along every day, so just like everyone else I plan to do the same. I was up next…

Sound check

I introduced myself to the crowd and went straight into my first song ‘Living In The City’. I finished to loud cheers but before I even got to say thank you to the crowd, I turned to see the two hosts starting to walk on-stage, as one of them said in his mic “Thank you very much Jorda-…!”, I immediately cut in and responded back in front of the 2000-strong audience into my mic ”I have another song prepared!” – the organisers had tried to end my set then and there as the whole show was running late. Both hosts were taken aback by my response and I could feel the awkward intensity coming from the audience (my mum was in the crowd!). I then said “it’s just two minutes long man just please let me sing it!”, turned to Kieran, my guitarist and went “Okay go”. But as he started to play, he responded “They’ve switched it off”. Frustrated, but keeping my cool, I turned to Ray, at the sound desk and said, “Could you please switch the guitar back on?” Still nothing… I then addressed the audience ”I’m singing ‘Use Somebody’ by Kings of Leon do you want to hear it?” and the whole auditorium screamed back ”YEEEAAAHHHH!!” Relieved, I thought to myself Yes! They’re on my side! I turned back to the sound desk and retorted, “See, they want to hear it! Now could you please switch the guitar back on and let me sing the song?” Ray did so and Kieran started playing. I sang my heart out and the crowd cheered so loudly at the end – what had happened minutes before was worth it, i thought!

At first, I felt maybe what I did came across as a desperate bid to sing more, which really wasn’t the case as I did originally have two songs prepared and all I wanted to do was showcase them! But when I spoke to the others backstage and some friends about it, they thought what I had done was great and that the crowd would definitely remember me because of it. At the end of the day, you can’t argue with the audience.

Check out the clip below of me singing two tracks; a cover of ‘Use Somebody’ and my forthcoming single ‘Living In The City’ – hope you guys like it! ;)
